Do you remember the last time someone asked you why we pray to cows? What about the time when someone asked why we wear that sacred powder on our forehead? Sarcastically or seriously, someone has asked us these questions. I was fortunate to have the book, ‘Dancing with Siva’ by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami on hand, and I was able to answers such questions after reading just few parts of the text. However, I realized that many students at my HSA branch did not have this book for reference when they came across such questions. Rather than looking up the answer on the internet and finding the truth within a zoo of various information and sometimes misinformation, I decided to have resources sent out to everyone in a convenient format.
Thus, at the University of Texas, Dallas branch, we started a monthly email article that hosts a question about our faith and an answer with a shloka and a description taken from the book ‘Dancing with Siva’. This provided our members with a good and reliable resource while encouraging awareness about Hinduism. Several questions posed in the book are interesting and thought-provoking. With the easy one-page explanation, it is very convenient to read and digest the information. Here is the first episode in our email list.
